To Groupon or not to Groupon?

Many of Shorewood’s savvy business owners have included a group buying offer as part of their marketing programs. Overall, they’ve had pretty positive experiences, and they have great insight into the process and what to expect. Knowing that this type of first-hand insight can be valuable to other local businesses considering whether or not a Groupon or Living Social offer might be an effective option for them, the Shorewood BID decided to host a panel discussion featuring Shorewood Business owners who have “done a Groupon.”

Our five panelists represent a diverse group of Shorewood businesses including The Establishment Salon, Gloss Photography Studios, Performance Running Outfitters, Thief Wine Shop & Bar and LaDea Medical Aesthetic & Laser Clinic. Jeff Sherman of OnMilwaukee.com - who runs his own “deal of the day” from that site - will moderate the panel.

Recent press would have small business owners believe the worst about these offers. Our panelists know that if you go into it understanding that it’s for marketing, not sales, and if you structure the offer wisely, Groupon can work for your business. They also have learned that the terms of a given deal can be negotiated - many small business owners who don’t know this may be likely to settle for Groupon’s boilerplate terms.

Join us at Big Bay Brewing, 4517 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood, on Thursday, May 19th at 5pm for a lively discussion and happy hour. RSVP or questions: paula@shorewoodwi.com

Shorewood’s Green Leaf Program Seeks Participants for 2011

The Green Leaf Program engages the Shorewood business community in greener practices and promotes a healthier, cleaner Shorewood and planet. The Green Leaf Award program was instituted in 2010 by the Shorewood Conservation Committee, in partnership with the Shorewood Business Improvement District. Greening your business helps attract new customers, develop a loyal customer base, and create a healthier work environment for employees. Businesses can also improve their bottom line and consumers receive more environmentally responsible products and services.

In 2010, six Shorewood businesses took part in the Green Leaf Program (Garden Room, Grande Flowers, Stone Creek Coffee, Gardens by Garland, SHOP and CYGA). They each received a Green Leaf Award at the Shorewood BID annual meeting this fall. According to Doug McDonald, manager of the Garden Room, “The process was smooth and easy, but not effortless.” He also added that ninety percent of making your business greener is culture change and a change in your thinking. Liz LeBlanc Sumner, co-owner of SHOP adds, “Small things you can do can have a huge impact.”

Other Shorewood business owners are now invited to join the program in 2011. The start of a new year is a great time to get serious about instituting or incorporating more green practices in your business. Any business owner who rents to businesses in Shorewood and any business that rents space in Shorewood for their business is eligible to participate. Contact Mike Hawes, special projects coordinator for the Village of Shorewood at 414.847.2706 or e-mail mhawes@villageofshorewood.org. He will link you up with a Green Leaf Award volunteer to answer your questions and to set up a meeting to begin the process.

Capitol Drive Construction in Final Stages

After a challenging summer, we are pleased to see the reconstruction of Capitol Drive coming to an end over the next month to six weeks. The beautiful, balmy fall weather has helped the project keep pace this season. Plus, road construction crews are currently working six days a week and occasional Sundays to complete the project by the end of November. Landscaping of the entire stretch of Capitol Dr. will be completed in 2011. We are getting very excited to welcome our new look along the Capitol Dr. corridor – and thank everyone for their patience during the past six months.

• East of Oakland Ave. Work on sidewalks, curbs, decorative bricks and sod placement should be completed at the end of October. Some benches and garbage cans will then be installed.
• West of Oakland Ave. The last piece of major excavation and reconstruction began on the north side of Capitol Dr. at the end of September and is due to be completed in November.

Watch for the new bridge! The second week in November is the projected installment date for the Capitol Dr. bridge that will serve as a welcoming gateway into the Village and allow bikers and hikers to once again enjoy the full length of the Oak Leaf Trail. Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) representatives note that bad weather or other unforseen difficulties could still affect the timetable. Once the bridge is in place, it will still have to be paved before it is officially ready for use.

Get ready for Shorewood’s handsome new streetscape along Capitol Drive. Our shops and restaurants are eager to provide their uncompromising customer service and selections and look forward to serving you during the holiday season!
