Businesses in Shorewood Encouraged To Go Green!

Filed under: shorewood village activities — Tags: , — admin @ 4:45 pm

Local Businesses Solicited To Help Shape New Green Leaf Program

Implementing green practices at anyone’s business can generate more profit and other added benefits. Consumers are becoming more socially conscious, and are looking to support green businesses. In an increasing difficult business environment, securing a green edge helps make a business more competitive and sustainable. It creates a healthier work environment for you and your employees, and also improves staff retention. All this, and helping the planet too!

Shorewood businesses are currently being solicited to participate in a new project sponsored by the Village of Shorewood Conservation Committee called the Green Leaf Award. The goal of the project is to promote green practices among local businesses. Only in its infancy, the project is looking to recruit and train volunteers to conduct green business audits for Shorewood building owners and business tenants. Topics covered in the audit will include energy, transportation, waste reduction, water and air quality, responsible purchasing, building and remodeling, food, and education. When a Shorewood business meets specified criteria it will receive a Green Leaf Award. The Shorewood Business Improvement District will acknowledge winners of a Green Leaf Award at its annual meeting held each fall.

The Conservation Committee is seeking local business owners who are interested in helping to plan the project and possibly be a guinea pig to test out the new green business audit tool being developed by the committee. If you are interested in learning more, contact Leah Dobkin at leahdobkin@aol.com.

Shorewood Goes Smoke-Free on July 1

Filed under: shorewood village activities — admin @ 8:52 am

The new smoke-free ordinance for the Village of Shorewood becomes effective July 1, when all Shorewood indoor public places and workplaces, including restaurants, bars and other places of employment, will be required to be smoke-free. The ordinance also applies to common areas of rental buildings, waiting rooms and lobbies of all buildings open to the public, health care and child care facilities, public transit/shelters, any place of employment not exempt, and village parks as posted.

Every building that is a place of employment must have at least one smoke-free entrance, along with a sign that states “No Smoking” posted at every entrance, in prominent locations inside a business, and in outdoor nonsmoking buffer zones.

In June 2006, former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona said: “The debate is over. The science is clear: Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance, but a serious health hazard that causes premature death and disease in children and non-smoking adults.” Secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including at least 69 carcinogens.

On May 18, Governor Jim Doyle signed legislation for a comprehensive smoking ban in workplaces in Wisconsin after July 5, 2010. A full year before the deadline, Shorewood is very proud to be a leader in offering safe workplaces and dining venues that will ensure that we all can breathe clean, smoke-free air.

For more information, visit villageofshorewood.org or smokefreeshorewood.com. You may also contact the Village of Shorewood Health Department at 414.847.2710.
