The Village of Shorewood is pleased to announce that its quarterly community magazine, Shorewood Today, is a national award winner. Shorewood Today was recently recognized by the Association for Women in Communications, a national organization of more than 7,000 women communicators based in Alexandria, Virginia, in its annual Clarion Award competition. Shorewood Today was the national winner in the category “magazine series in a circulation of 100,000 or less.” Competing against entries from all over the world, Shorewood’s village-wide magazine took top honors in this category.
Shorewood Today is a full-color community magazine providing useful information about the Village of Shorewood and offering news and feature stories about the people, places and things that make the Shorewood community a special place to live, do business and raise a family. The magazine is an important example of successful collaboration between the Shorewood School District, Village government and the Shorewood Business Improvement District, with additional support from Shorewood’s Marketing Program.
Shorewood is extremely proud of the accomplishments of this high-quality magazine. Shorewood Today is a powerful marketing tool that links residents and business owners and showcases all the benefits of living and working in the Village. The reconstruction of Capitol Dr. in Shorewood has begun. The full and complete construction includes sidewalks, curbs and gutters, medians, and road surface, as well as lighting, storm sewer and traffic signal systems (between Lake Dr. and Estabrook Pkwy.). By mid-November, major construction should be completed. Streetscaping details, including new trees and other plantings, will be installed in 2011.
The Village, the State Department of Transportation (DOT) and other stakeholders have labored for more than two years to prepare a construction plan that can be completed in one construction season and that will allow continual use of the road and access to businesses and residential side streets during construction.

The Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID) is proud to host the 7th annual Shorewood Criterium on Thursday, June 17! For this year’s race, the Shorewood BID is partnering with the Tour of America’s Dairyland (ToAD) race series to bring world-class bike racing to Shorewood. Tour of America’s Dairyland offers high-energy cycling action featuring the best of professional and amateur racers from across the country (www.tourofamericasdairyland.com). The complete race series runs from June 17- 27 in southeastern Wisconsin.
Over the past six years, the Shorewood Criterium has grown to become one of the Village’s most popular summer events. Thousands of residents and guests plan a special summer evening around the race course by inviting friends and family to join them on their lawns for a front-row seat. Plus, hundreds more join together to cheer on the racers at the thrilling finish line on Oakland Ave.

As of December 14, the State of Wisconsin has granted recognition to Open Book as an official cooperative. Think of what has been accomplished in a short six months. Culver’s of Shorewood Receives Pride Award for Overall Restaurant Cleanliness
Peter and George Dimitropoulos, owners of Culver’s® of Shorewood (1325 E. Capitol Dr.), were one of the select few franchise partners across the country chosen to receive the Restaurant Pride Award from Culver Franchising System, Inc. (CFSI). The Restaurant Pride Award recognizes Culver’s franchise partners who meet the highest standards of excellence for keeping their restaurants clean and inviting to guests. CFSI representatives completed a system-wide review of 400+ restaurants to rate the best at maintaining each restaurants’ cleanliness. North Star Named One of Top 30 Milwaukee Restaurants by Journal Sentinel
Shorewood’s North Star American Bistro was rated one of Milwaukee’s Top 30 restaurants by food critic Carol Deptolla of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in its September 13 paper. According to Deptolla, “These restaurants (North Star also has a Brookfield location) by Duffy O’Neil and Mike Stoner are as adept at serving a casual weeknight supper as a special weekend dinner, in comfortable, contemporary settings with very good, attentive service. If I want a burger, North Star’s is a tasty, juicy half-pounder; for a comforting dinner, I’ll take the super-moist roast chicken; and if I want a good steak at less-than-steakhouse prices, I’ll get the flavorful sirloin served au poivre.” North Star in Shorewood is located at 4515 N. Anaba Tea Room Chef Featured in Journal Sentinel, October 10
In an article by Joanne Kempinger Demski on Oct. 10 in the Entree section of the Journal Sentinel, Chef Gregg Des Rosier of Anaba Tea Room was featured for his innovative cooking with teas. Des Rosier said he has been cooking with tea since he started working at the restaurant five years ago. He uses brewed teas to make tarts, ice cream and scones, and dried teas in rubs and dressings. Although many of the dishes he serves at Anaba are unique, he said, cooking with tea is nothing new - and it’s easy. It has been done throughout history, he says, in subtle and overt ways. “If you know how to cook, it will seem natural. It’s a craft, not a science. . . . “Butterflies in Flight” Features 30 Custom-Decorated Butterfly Forms
The Village of Shorewood will be all a-flutter this summer with “Butterflies in Flight,” a public art project designed to celebrate the uniqueness of the Village. The “butterflies” are part of an exhibition of custom-decorated forms that will be on display throughout the business district from mid-June to mid-August. Individual businesses and community groups are pitching in to “sponsor” a butterfly. The Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID) is managing and producing the event which is presented by the Shorewood Foundation. Additional support from the Shorewood Department of Public Works, the Shorewood Men’s Club and the Shorewood Marketing Initiative has made this first-time public art exhibition possible.
Designs for the butterfly forms are being created by talented local artists and individuals. See amazing designs using paint, mosaic, fabric and mixed media. The 30 colorfully decorated fiberglass butterflies can be viewed outdoors starting June 20 during regular store hours throughout the Shorewood business district along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr., as well as at Village Hall and the Shorewood Library. The exhibition is an extension of the business district beautification that began with last summer’s Oakland Avenue streetscaping project. After the event closes in August, the butterflies will be collected and sold during a voice auction this fall to benefit the Shorewood Foundation.
