The reconstruction of Capitol Dr. in Shorewood has begun. The full and complete construction includes sidewalks, curbs and gutters, medians, and road surface, as well as lighting, storm sewer and traffic signal systems (between Lake Dr. and Estabrook Pkwy.). By mid-November, major construction should be completed. Streetscaping details, including new trees and other plantings, will be installed in 2011.

The Village, the State Department of Transportation (DOT) and other stakeholders have labored for more than two years to prepare a construction plan that can be completed in one construction season and that will allow continual use of the road and access to businesses and residential side streets during construction.

Shorewood businesses NEED YOUR SUPPORT – especially now during construction. We want to make sure our businesses not only survive, but thrive, during this challenging time. Spend the day and shop and dine in our Village. Our specialty boutiques and award-winning restaurants, pubs and cafes, conveniently located along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr., are waiting to serve you. If you are visiting a business on Capitol Dr., please note that it is one-way traffic only going east from Oakland Ave. Watch for signage directing you to alternate parking on adjacent side streets. Please shop Shorewood – our business owners will be most appreciative!

For detailed information about the full project and the timing of various construction phases, please visit www.villageofshorewood.org or www.capitoldrive.info.

Shorewood WI Annual Public Art Event

Seeking Milwaukee Area Artists To Participate in Annual Public Art Event - Business Sponsors Also Solicited

The Shorewood Business Improvement District is pleased to announce its public art event for summer 2010 - and invites area artists to apply to participate. The theme for this year’s event revolves around a custom-made bench. Artists whose proposals are selected will be paired with a Village business or organization to be their sponsor. Each decorated bench will reside outside a storefront on public display in Shorewood’s business district through the duration of the event (June 5-August 15). A public auction will be held at the end of August, when the benches will be auctioned off to benefit the Shorewood Foundation, the event’s presenting sponsor. “Best Seats in the House” is being produced by the Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID).

Cash prizes will be awarded for the best five designs ($400 first place, $300 second place, $200 third place and two $100 honorable mentions). Each artist will receive a $100 stipend to cover the costs of supplies.

Postmark deadline for proposals is Friday, March 12. There is no fee to submit a design, and more than one entry can be submitted. Applications will be juried the week of March 15 with notification by March 19. Artists will need to pick up their bench on Saturday, March 27 in Shorewood. Artists will be given approximately 7 weeks to complete their work before a deadline of May 14 to return the decorated bench. Any media can be used to decorate and embellish the bench, including paint, mosaic and mixed media. The more unique and imaginative, the better!

After Shorewood’s very successful “Butterflies in Flight” public art exhibition last summer, this year’s “Best Seats in the House” promises to be an even bigger and better event. Let your creativity run wild by custom-decorating one of our handsome benches (size: 48 inches long x 36 inches high x 22 inches wide, weighing approximately 35 pounds). Enjoy the public display of your bench for over 2 months, including a plaque with your name on it. Your name will also be listed in an event brochure and on the Shorewood Business Improvement District website and other marketing materials.

SPECIAL NOTE: Seeking business sponsors for this event! As a sponsor of the event, your name will be prominently displayed on a plaque mounted to the bench, which will be displayed in front of your store or business from June 5 to August 15. Your name will be included on the Shorewood BID website, in the event brochure, posters and other marketing materials. But most importantly, your business will be a DESTINATION this summer with a bench on display for 2+ months to attract new customers/visitors to your location. The cost for a business sponsorship is only $295.

“Best Seats in the House” will engage Shorewood’s attractive, walkable community this summer in a celebration of discovery as residents and guests stroll the business district to discover our fabulous benches! For more information and to request an artist or sponsor application, please e-mail barb@shorewoodwi.com or visit www.shorewoodwi.com.

Hubbard Park Lodge, Shorewood’s much-loved treasure and historic landmark, has a new proprietor

Hubbard Park Lodge, Shorewood’s much-loved treasure and historic landmark, has a new proprietor. Milwaukee restaurateur Russ Davis has signed a 10-year lease with the Village to operate the Lodge and the nearby Shorewood River Club. Davis brings extensive expertise to the venture with his experience as owner of the Vecchio Entertainment Group, which includes Lakefront Palm Garden (inside the Lakefront Brewery on Commerce St.), Rio West Cantina (on Humboldt Ave. in the Riverwest neighborhood), and The Red Accordion (in downtown Milwaukee).

Davis, a Shorewood resident, has some exciting plans for the Lodge. He says his goal is to attract families on a more regular basis. On his agenda is a Sunday morning family-friendly, lumberjack breakfast with pancakes and an omelet bar. Friday nights will bring the fun, quality and affordability of Captain Rusty’s popular fish fries along with The Brewhaus Polka Kings, already famous at the Lakefront Palm Garden.

Davis is looking forward to the new restaurant. “My wife and I are thrilled to take over operations at Hubbard Park Lodge. This historic building is an absolute gem and we are honored to begin a new era of restaurant operations that we hope will please our neighbors. Bringing the community together for good food and exceptional service in a family-friendly atmosphere are our primary goals,” he says.

The Lodge will keep its tradition of being open to the public on weekends and closed for private affairs during the week – plus the special buffet on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Easter. And as always, it will remain a beautiful setting for Saturday afternoon and evening weddings.

Hubbard Park celebrated 71 years last fall – it is one of 13 identical structures built across the U.S. as a Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) Project initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration during the Great Depression. Our Hubbard Park Lodge is one of only two of the original buildings left standing (the other is just outside Washington, D.C.).

The Shorewood Business Improvement District will acknowledge winners of a Green Leaf Award at its annual meeting held each fall.

Local Businesses Solicited To Help Shape New Green Leaf Program

Implementing green practices at anyone’s business can generate more profit and other added benefits. Consumers are becoming more socially conscious, and are looking to support green businesses. In an increasing difficult business environment, securing a green edge helps make a business more competitive and sustainable. It creates a healthier work environment for you and your employees, and also improves staff retention. All this, and helping the planet too!

Shorewood businesses are currently being solicited to participate in a new project sponsored by the Village of Shorewood Conservation Committee called the Green Leaf Award. The goal of the project is to promote green practices among local businesses. Only in its infancy, the project is looking to recruit and train volunteers to conduct green business audits for Shorewood building owners and business tenants. Topics covered in the audit will include energy, transportation, waste reduction, water and air quality, responsible purchasing, building and remodeling, food, and education. When a Shorewood business meets specified criteria it will receive a Green Leaf Award. The Shorewood Business Improvement District will acknowledge winners of a Green Leaf Award at its annual meeting held each fall.

The Conservation Committee is seeking local business owners who are interested in helping to plan the project and possibly be a guinea pig to test out the new green business audit tool being developed by the committee. If you are interested in learning more, contact Leah Dobkin at leahdobkin@aol.com.
