2008 Special Events
Special events are the cornerstone of our marketing efforts. 2008 was an exciting year and offered a variety of fun and interesting events that attracted shoppers to our bustling business district. The Shorewood Business Improvement District presented the following special events during 2008:
Streetscape Saturdays: April 19, May 17 and
June 21
Streetscape Saturdays put a new spin on helping businesses not just survive - but thrive - during Shorewood’s streetscaping project. Each Streetscape Saturday offered special activities - from face painting to balloon twisting to juggling - and even free giveaways. Shoppers wearing special Streetscape Saturdays pins were randomly selected by a secret shopper to receive gift certificates to Shorewood businesses in the streetscaping area.
5th Annual Criterium International Cycling Classic: Thursday, July 17
The summer’s most fantastic bike race sped through the heart of Shorewood’s business district. Residents and guests took to the streets to enjoy this exciting afternoon and evening event; many had parties or cookouts as they watched the bikers whip past their homes. The Criterium is a powerful fusion of the best athletes in the world and today’s high-tech bicycles in an explosion of speed, power and thrills.
The event featured hundreds of top professional and elite amateur cyclists and teams from across the U.S. plus more than 20 foreign countries. The race is part of the Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic – also known as “Superweek” – the world’s largest, multi-category cycling event in the U.S. This year’s event was presented by the Shorewood Foundation with major title sponsors Tim Hart D.D.S. and Jerry Pearce and Rainbow Jersey Bicycles.
Showcase Shorewood: Saturday, September 13
What makes Shorewood such a great place to live, work and shop? Village residents and guests discovered more about our wonderful Village during this popular fall event. Shorewood proudly showcased its finest from fine art and fine crafts created by local talent, to sidewalk sales, in-store promotions, live musical entertainment and a business expo. Face painting, free art classes for kids and complimentary trolley rides rounded out the day.
Holiday Shopwalk: December 6
The annual Holiday Shopwalk kicked off the holiday shopping season – it’s a fun day for everyone with free trolley rides, special offers, complimentary refreshments, strolling carolers and a visit from Santa. World-renowned, award-winning professional ice carvers sculpted frosty blocks of ice into stunning masterpieces along Oakland Avenue and Capitol Drive.
