Showcase Awards Honor Shorewood Business Owners

The Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID) has initiated the Showcase Awards to recognize businesses that support and make an important difference to the commercial vitality of Shorewood. The five winners of the 2007 awards were announced at the BID's Annual Meeting on October 24.

In announcing the awards, Tim Ryan, President of the Shorewood BID Board of Directors, said Shorewood was extremely fortunate to have business leaders who are willing to make investments in the future of the community. "They are leading the way and setting the pace for a new vitality in the Shorewood business district. The entire community is grateful to them."

Three Shorewood businesses received awards as Showcase Businesses of the Year in recognition of their outstanding leadership, dedication and support of the mission of the Shorewood BID. The three award recipients were also cited for their involvement and major contributions to community projects and special events.

Deborah Kern, owner of The Garden Room, a garden store at 2107 E. Capitol Dr. Kern made a significant investment in her property, including the creation of a unique, 1900-sq.-ft. "green roof" garden.

John and Ann Nehring, owners of Nehring's Sendik's on Oakland, at 4027 N. Oakland Ave., a long-established Shorewood food market with a tradition for quality. The Nehrings renovated the interior of the store and added new departments and products.

Noah Christensen, owner of the Shorewood Press, a full-service printing at 4060 N. Oakland Ave. Christensen did extensive remodeling on his building, and was one of the first to take advantage of the BID's Façade Improvement Program.

Two other Shorewood businesses received the year's Showcase Façade Improvement Award recognizing new, exciting property investments that enhance the physical and pedestrian environment in Shorewood.

Rich Schmidt, owner of The Oakcrest Tavern at 4022 N. Oakland Ave., one of the newest additions to Shorewood�s business district. Schmidt completely remodeled the interior of the space and made enhancements to the exterior of the property.

Michael Schramm, owner and founder of Schramm & Company, Inc. Realtors and Schramm Management, an investment real estate and property management firm. Schramm recently completed major exterior renovations to his multi-tenant building in the 2300 block of E. Capitol Dr.
